Sky Blue Lacquer Chest
Dallas Market this week was full of all shades of blues from icy robin’s egg to the brightest turquoise. Robin + I noticed the color theme all around the market in all aspects from gifts to furniture to fabrics. Not surprisingly, we spied an article in a furniture trade magazine + our thoughts were confirmed. Pantone announced the Color of the Year:2010 was Turquoise. “Combining the serene qualities of blue and the invigorating aspects of green, Turquoise evokes thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a languorous, effective escape from the everyday troubles of the world, while at the same time restoring our sense of wellbeing,” quotes the press release.

Turquoise Tole Lantern
Loved loved loved this Oriental inspired tole lantern in the perfect punch of color…turquoise. The unexpected pop of color would be great in a powder bath or entry hall. Note the clever punched metal details on the side +, of course, the darling scalloped trim…

Fox + Riddle Seaglass Mosaic Rug
Amazing variegated wool rug is in beach glass hues of sea blue, palm green mixed with sand. We loved the modern take on a shaker pieced rug. This unique style would update the most traditional of interiors or add just the right amount of color to a neutral toned room. One of our favorites!

Maddie's Room After
With each new year comes the desire for fresh changes. What a great time to move some furniture around, update your accessories and give a new lease on life to a tired room. My daughter, Maddie, recently moved into her own room from sharing bunk beds with little brother Cooper (not so cool for an 11 year old girl!).

Maddie's Room Before
We started with this existing setup -– plain Jane –- and made some clever, inexpensive changes to give some pop.

Amy Butler's Clever Decorative Papers
The inspiration and color palette came from a book of decorative papers and coordinating fabrics designed by one of our fave designers, Amy Butler. Check out Amy’s website, it’s amazing!
Papers were found at Michael’s and fabric (for 20 inch square pillows) online at Crafty Planet. We now have CityCraft here in Dallas. They carry Amy’s fabrics as well.

IKEA And Target Bargain Finds
Next, I framed the papers with inexpensive frames from IKEA. Cheap art that gives a bit of a modern touch! I also added lamps from IKEA and mirrored side tables from Target to flank each side. Fabric, frames, side tables and lamps all for $300. Wow! Clever design doesn’t discriminate –- you just need to be a sleuth for good buys.

Happy New Year!

What a remarkable week in Santa Fe! My longtime high school friend and NYC fashion guru, Cynthia OʼConnor, have begun a tradition of getting our families together for holiday times in different locales.
We went for a week of gallery strolling, house hunting ( what a great hobby – it never hurts to look! ), game playing and general relaxation. It turned into a ski week infused with marvelous gourmet dining thrown in and a great deal of design inspiration.
Traveling epicureans: Cynthia and I have been cooking up fresh, unusual feasts since our time as early Dallas retailers in the 80ʼs. One stop at the local Whole Foods was an inspiration for several dinners – especially our New Yearʼs Eve Lemon Garlic Hens with Seared Sweet Peppers.

I am known amongst friends for photographing memorable meals – some of my best travel memories incorporate the dining experiences! Among this weekʼs Best of Show was the Cornbread (Native American style) BLT at Pasqualʼs. The brown sugar roasted bacon, heirloom tomatoes and arugula changed my life.

Pomegranate seeds became the staple of the week, topping the accompanying salad adding a tasty tang.
A stop at Tecolote cafe, a localʼs dinner with quintessential New Mexican cuisine proved to be amazing. The Huevos Yucatecos were crazy delicious: the requisite green chile sauce covered eggs beans and posole. Grilled bananas are a perfect sweet contrast to the roasted chiles.
What an inspirational and delicioso trip!
